The Preserva Method: first we try to save the tooth

  • “I was told all my teeth have to go”
  • “I’d like to keep my own teeth”
  • “I want a second opinion”

Faced with a complex problem, it is tempting to go straight to removing and replacing. We start from another question: can this tooth be saved? The Preserva Method is our way of answering it, in five steps, with accurate diagnosis and conservative techniques.

What it is

The Preserva Method is an approach designed to keep natural teeth as far as possible. At the Kravos & Guadagno practice in Trieste we believe that saving teeth is the better choice for keeping function and appearance in the long term, while reducing how invasive treatment has to be.

It rests on accurate diagnosis and conservative techniques. Saving teeth takes technical skill and close teamwork between professionals of different branches of dentistry: this multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to plan complete, personalised treatment, respecting the health and the look of your smile.

Without forgetting

  • Your time: personalised appointments and organised treatment plans.
  • Comfort: a welcoming setting, to make the experience pleasant.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

Who it is for

  • People who have been told many teeth must come out and want an assessment before deciding.
  • People with gum disease, loose teeth or many old treatments to redo.
  • Anyone who wants to keep their own teeth for as long as possible.

When it is not done, or should wait

Not every tooth can be saved: when a tooth has lost its support or is fractured deep down, we say so clearly and discuss how to replace it.

The method takes time and consistency: preparation and maintenance are what make the result last.

Step by step

How it works

  1. First visitWe take the time to get to know you and understand what you need, with up-to-date diagnostic tools.
  2. Diagnosis and previewA complete diagnosis and, in many cases, a simulation of the smile, to decide on together before starting.
  3. Preparatory treatmentLike a house needs solid foundations, the mouth is treated first: gum disease, decay, infections.
  4. Restoring the teethThe prosthetic work aims to restore appearance, function and comfort, building on solid ground.
  5. Regular maintenanceA personalised programme of hygiene and check-ups, to keep what has been done.

Saving teeth is our main goal.

Why we try to save first

Faced with complex dental problems, people sometimes end up having all their teeth removed and replaced with implants. These decisions cannot be undone: that is why it is worth knowing the patient’s history, expectations and wishes in depth first.

We developed the Preserva Method for patients who share our goal: saving natural teeth and keeping treatment as little invasive as possible.

Treatments that work together

The Method brings together treatments from several fields: first the health of the gums and teeth, then rebuilding, then maintenance.

The treatments along the way

  • Treatment of gum disease, starting with a deep clean below the gums.
  • Fillings and root canal treatment, to save the teeth that can be treated.
  • The digital preview of the smile.
  • Prosthetic work, on teeth or on implants.
  • Hygiene appointments and regular check-ups.

Before the session and in the days after

Before the session

  • If you have recent X-rays, reports or a treatment plan from elsewhere, bring them: they help us understand the history of your teeth.
  • Write down the questions you want to ask: the visit is there for that too.

In the days after

  • You receive the treatment plan explained, with its stages and timing, and decide calmly.
  • Maintenance continues after treatment: hygiene appointments and check-ups at the frequency agreed together.

Risks, explained honestly

Saving a tooth does not always succeed: sometimes the outlook remains uncertain after treatment. We tell you beforehand, with the chances and the timing, and decide together.

A conservative plan can take more appointments than an immediate replacement.

No treatment can give certainty of success: that is why every step is explained and decided together.

The alternatives

  • Removing compromised teeth and replacing them with implants or dentures: considered when saving them is not possible or not worthwhile.
  • Treating only the urgent problem and postponing the rest: possible, with its risks, which we discuss at the visit.

Questions

What you ask us

Is it better to save a compromised tooth or replace it with an implant?

A tooth that has been treated, even many times, is as a rule better than a titanium implant.

When chewing, a natural tooth moves imperceptibly, thanks to the ligament that holds it in the bone; an implant, being fixed and rigid, cannot. A tooth that moves visibly, on the other hand, should be checked.

Around a tooth, gingivitis treated in time heals completely; around an implant the inflammation heals more slowly, and it is not certain that everything returns to how it was. If instead the inflammation has already destroyed the support of the tooth (periodontitis), what has been lost does not as a rule come back, but with treatment the disease usually stops.

An inflammation around an implant, if it is not treated, can end in losing it: this is why people with implants have professional hygiene more often and take great care of their teeth at home.
