Kravos & Guadagno, dental practice in Trieste

Simone Kravos and Francesco Guadagno, dentists, have worked together in Via San Nicolò since 2009; Michela Pocecco runs the practice with them. Today we are a team of more than twenty-five people, and before removing a tooth we try to save it.

Monday to Thursday 9:00-19:00, Friday 9:00-18:00

At the practice we speak Italian, English, German, Slovenian, Russian and French.

The Preserva Method

First, we try to save the tooth.

Faced with a complex problem, it is tempting to remove and replace straight away. We start from another question: can this tooth be saved? The Preserva Method is our way of answering, in five steps.

How the Preserva Method works

  1. First visitTime to get to know you and understand what you need.
  2. Diagnosis and previewA complete examination and, in many cases, a simulation of the smile, to decide on together.
  3. PreparationFirst the mouth is treated: gums, decay, infections.
  4. Restoring the teethRebuilding on healthy foundations, with the right crown, bridge or denture.
  5. MaintenanceCheck-ups and regular hygiene, to keep what has been done over time.

If you are afraid of the dentist

Afraid of the dentist? It starts with a conversation.

If you have not been to the dentist for years, nobody here will judge you. At the first visit we look and we talk: the treatment plan is decided together, at a second appointment. On request you can meet our dogs, trained for animal-assisted interventions: taking part is always voluntary, they do not enter the treatment rooms during treatment, and if you are allergic just tell us when you book. A psychologist works with the practice, and you can listen to your own music at every session.

Patients’ questions

The questions you ask us most often

All the questions (in Italian)

Will I notice if I have tooth decay?

Often not: at first, tooth decay usually has no symptoms.

When you feel sensitivity to cold or sweet things, or sensitivity in general, the deeper layers of the tooth are usually already involved, and the risk of more demanding treatment grows, such as root canal treatment or large fillings that can cause problems over time.

Regular check-ups, clinical and with bitewing X-rays (not panoramic ones), are the most reliable way to find decay early.

Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush my teeth?

No. Gums should never bleed.

When healthy, the gum, like any mucous tissue, does not bleed.

If it bleeds, you need a check-up with your dentist to find out whether there is gingivitis, periodontitis or a systemic condition.

Can I go to the dentist if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes. It is essential to see the dentist before, during and after pregnancy.

To keep an eye on oral health as hormones change.

Sometimes urgent hygiene measures are needed to reduce any negative effects that may arise during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Is it better to save a compromised tooth or replace it with an implant?

A tooth that has been treated, even many times, is as a rule better than a titanium implant.

When chewing, a natural tooth moves imperceptibly, thanks to the ligament that holds it in the bone; an implant, being fixed and rigid, cannot. A tooth that moves visibly, on the other hand, should be checked.

Around a tooth, gingivitis treated in time heals completely; around an implant the inflammation heals more slowly, and it is not certain that everything returns to how it was. If instead the inflammation has already destroyed the support of the tooth (periodontitis), what has been lost does not as a rule come back, but with treatment the disease usually stops.

An inflammation around an implant, if it is not treated, can end in losing it: this is why people with implants have professional hygiene more often and take great care of their teeth at home.

Emergencies

Severe pain, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth?

  • If you find it hard to breathe, swallow or speak, if the swelling spreads up towards the eye or down towards the neck, if you cannot open your mouth, or after a blow to the head: call 112 straight away or go to the emergency department.
  • During opening hours call the practice: we will tell you straight away what to do and when to come. For emergencies there are also the two partners’ mobiles.
  • If they do not answer: for pain in the evening, at night, at weekends and on public holidays, the out-of-hours doctor on 116117; the emergency department for a tooth knocked out or broken by a blow, for bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of pressure with gauze, or for swelling with a high fever.
  • If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown, not the root, and bring it straight away in milk or saliva: getting here within an hour matters. A baby tooth is not put back.
